چکیده
Microscopic digital volume correlation (DVC) and finite element precoalescence strain evaluations are compared for two nodular cast iron specimens. Displacement fields from \textit{in-situ} 3D synchrotron laminography images obtained by DVC. Subsequently the microstructure is explicitely meshed considering nodules as voids. Boundary conditions applied DVC measurement. Image segmentation-related uncertainties taken into account observed to be negligible with respect differences between levels. Macroscopic well local levels in coalescing ligaments voids nucleated at large graphite compared. consistently predicted. A very good agreement one of specimens, while second specimen presents some discrepancies. Limitations modeling numerical framework discussed light these differences. discussion use coalescence indicator initiated.

Casting and stress-strain simulations of a cast ductile iron component using microstructure based mechanical behavior
The industrial demand for increased component performance with concurrent reductions in component weight, development times and verifications using physical prototypes drives the need to use the full potential of casting and Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations to correctly predict the mechanical behavior of cast components in service. The mechanical behavior of the component is determined b...
متن کاملAnalysis of microstructural strain-fields in grey cast iron
With increasing engine capacity the demand on the material increases. To meet the requirements new more advanced test methods are invented. One of these test methods is the digital image correlation technique (DIC). This method analyses deformations in materials by correlating the displacement in a set of sequentially acquired images. To be able to measure the deformations the material needs to...
متن کاملEffect of Dynamic Strain Aging on Isothermal (473K) Low Cycle Fatigue of Ferritic Ductile Cast Iron
The ferritic ductile iron (FCD400) is widely used as industrial material. As regards to its high temperature application, fatigue at elevated temperature, and advanced mechanical properties has been investigated and clarified. In low cycle fatigue (LCF), the S-N curve is presented by the relation of plastic strain to the number of cycles as fatigue life, which can be predicted by the Manson-Cof...
متن کاملNDT of Ductile Cast Iron from Nuclear Waste Storage Canisters
The concept for geological disposal of nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel relies on a multi-barrier system with the copper/cast iron canister as the first barrier. The canister is designed to retain its integrity for at least 100000 years, which means that future glaciations need to be considered. A thick ice block together with hydrostatic pressure from groundwater would produce hydrostatic ...
متن کاملFatigue Performance of Forged Steel and Ductile Cast Iron Crankshafts
Fatigue is the primary cause of failure of crankshafts in internal combustion engines. The cyclic loading conditions and the stress concentrations in the crank pin fillets are unavoidable, and can result in fatigue failure. The objectives of this study were to compare the fatigue behavior of forged steel and ductile iron crankshafts from a one-cylinder engine as well as to determine if the fati...
